Lianyungang is located in the middle part of China's eastcoastline, northeast of Jiangsu Province. Lianyungang faces Japan and South Korea across the sea. It borders on Rizhao, Shandong in the north, Lianyungang is situated at the transitional part between sea and land, south and north. Lianyungang is one of China's first 14 open coastal cities to the outside world approved by the State Council in 1984. It is the east bridgehead of the New Eurasia Land Bridge. The longest distance from east to west is about 129 km and 132 kmfrom south to north.
